Gavelston TX 11-18-2018

It’s a rainy stormy day but that will not get in the way of our drive to Galveston. We jump in to the Mini and head south. We were told about this great place to eat in Galveston and we also wanted to see the historic homes. We arrive to the Sunflower Bakery and Café. It’s a Sunday and the place is busy, we made it in time for Brunch. Service is excellent and the menu is full of southern hospitality. After Brunch a walk in the rain through the historic district in which the Sunflower Bakery sits. The homes are incredibly ornate and large, as the pictures show some are remodeled and some are pretty rundown but considering the storms they have had and over the last hundred years not bad. There is a sign on a cyclone fence that I thought was funny, this persons yard is all Astro turf and he does not want his neighbor to blow his cut grass on to his property. I also loved that they left the Purity Ice Cream sign post. We continue the walk towards the Galveston Medical College and found the Ashbel Smith Building that has been preserved and in use. The two plaques tell the story or you can click on the link above. As you probably know Galveston is surrounded by water so off to the boardwalk. Our walk brings us to a surf shop with the name of Ohana, it is the same as our good friend’s business, Brent & Lonnie so of course we enter for a look. It’s a locally owned shop and the owner engages us with stories and local knowledge, it’s a great looking surf shop. The last picture is of a restaurant we stopped at before we head back to Rob & Joanne’s that evening, it was called Zoe’s Kitchen which is a franchise but has healthy food, I was so hungry I took a bite before the picture.
