In The Beginning

We all have considered the freedom of RV travel and hundreds of thousands of people do each year, the real question is what kind of RVer are you. Some are a casual weekender to full time RVing and everything in between. What is in your psyche that wants you to be a traveler. I think it goes back to caveman times where moving, traveling kept you alive.

Food sourcing to avoiding other bands of unfriendly people or animals was the norm. We have dreamed for many years of taking the time to travel this beautiful country of ours in a RV. We made the decision in February 2018 based on my health to do it now. In our situation we felt it best to sell our home in this up market, take the funds and buy a rental plus put enough cash back so we could build or buy something when the time came. Selling our beautiful home was hard as we had many good memories and customized it to our liking. The good news is that it sold to the one of the first buyers who had a great family to enjoy it. So back to our approach on what to purchase, we watched many blogs and read many articles to better educate ourselves for the best decision.

Many travelers like minimalist, other like luxury we were in the middle not only based on size but a budget. We definitely wanted to be under 30 feet as our travel plan was national or state parks and the weather. Everyone said for the parks under 30 feet is best. I had done a ton of research on the internet and was confident on what was selling for what price. Buying a newer used was are target not only getting more for your money but some of the glitches would have been worked out. I’m putting in bold the last sentence so you will remember it as we continue the story. It was my feeling the B class Sprinter was what would work best, diesel, 25.5 feet, easy to maneuver. So, I shopped it hard but found it difficult to fit a newer used model in our budget of around $80,000.

Most of the ones I found were a long way away, Florida, AZ, Texas. We finally found one in Eugene so off we go to give it a test drive, it was much older than I wanted 2009 but it had under 50,000 miles one owner with a diesel generator. It was all I was expecting but as you know our wives make the choice. I drove it and it really seemed like an oversized van and hoped when Angela took the wheel, she would feel comfortable. They are very efficient inside and finished well. After Angela drove it, we did a review, I could see from the concerned look on her face after counting storage space this was not going to work for her, perhaps for a month or two but not full time RVing. Next, we drove an A class, 27 plus feet and found them more difficult and unwieldy. The only class left was a c class so we headed over to Big Country for a look. The RV business is brisk and sometime the selection is slim. We met a very nice salesperson Scott who was not pressuring us on any level, very smart about the motor homes we were looking at. Angela big criteria was she wanted one that was built green and I don’t mean the color, as it turns out Coachman does build some that are green construction using a product called Azdel. We have all probably gone in a new home or RV and smelled the off gassing of products that are not healthy. We stuck our heads in a few and did not go any farther than the entry. With this in mind Scott showed us this great looking Chevy Coachman Leprechaun, 2019 & 27 feet long, only one problem it’s on sale at $106,000, that’s not going to happen. Across the lot we see another C Class Sunseeker more in our price range and its under consideration. Now that we have switched gears to C Class I continue the internet search, C Class is a much easier product to search for and I saw lots of them. My search took me to Big Country RV in Redmond, about 12 miles down the road from their Bend store. Their it was 2018 Coachmen Leprechaun 260DS at $86,900, it was burgundy and we did not like the color but I knew I could use it as leverage to buy the one we wanted. I go into see Scott at the Bend store and let him know we are interested in their Leprechaun but only if they will sell it to us for the $86,900 price I saw at their other lot, even though it is a 2019. Scott said ok he will take it to his manager for a review, he came back 15 minutes later and said we have deal. We looked at each other kind of in shock, we just bought an RV.
