Charleston SC 2-24-2019

We had some time left in Charleston before moving farther north and heard about this great place to eat called Lewis barbeque but before lunch we finish off some the streets we missed before in the historic district. The Trinity United Methodist Church was another stand out, you could sense the history with its many columns in font reaching for the sky. We are always interested in Real Estate where ever we go and when we passed by this window who would not be interested in a Handsome Property. The next historic place was The Washington Light Infantry building, this was the site for one of the oldest Militia groups in America and house lots of memorabilia starting from the civil war. A couple more churches are on our tour, the Citadel Square Baptist Church and St. Mathews Lutheran. The Ponce Cat cafe was like a magnet to Angela, anything that concerns cats. This is a very clever idea, they charge you by the hour to come in and immerse yourself in the Catdom lounge, enjoy a beverage or snack as you enjoy yourself and the cats, of course if you qualify, they would love a home.

Back to history and what is great is most of Charleston is very walkable. Most of the homes have plaques giving a short description of who and when to include Colonel John Stuart’s home. Tradd Street was on the original design plan in 1680 for Charles Town, make sure you walk this street; 32 Legare St. is a famous place and for sale for a mere 15 million, it was owned by Lincolns granddaughter. Most of these cities on the coast were not only built for shipping but to defend the country, there were batteries and forts throughout city, many plaques are telling of their story, Fort Moultrie is one. Besides the grand architecture of the time the gardens and landscaping are gorgeous, love the ivy steps. The churches almost always would have cemetery’s full of notables and church members who probably contributed heavily to be there. If you want to surround yourself in southern style and luxury the Bennett Hotel is the place, when entering you start to speak with a southern accent and vision of mint julips pass through your mind. If you want shopping, restaurants and bars King Street is the place. The south honors the confederate armies in many parks with many statues, it has become political and many people hope to scrub history by tearing this historic place down, my analogy is we should tear down the churches as well as throughout history they did some horrific things as well. The Confederate Defenders is one such park. The homes we walked by you could almost hear them telling you their stories, all the lives, winters, springs and falls for hundreds of years. The George Washington Park and Charleston Battery Park were incredible, ever seen such a fat cannon. All this history has made us hungry and we head out to a fairly new place called Lewis BBQ, the short story is this boy from the famous BBQ in Austin TX called Franklin and if you have been there get in line, anyway his adventurous soul brought him to Charleston and using his talent he has so far, in my life, created the best BBQ I have ever had, not only is the food great but how they do it, you got go there. We certainly got our fill and then back to the RV for tomorrow we are headed farther north.
