Cottonwood/Jerome AZ, 4-1-2019

Driving down the pass to Sedona last night was a bit scary, the vertical drop was from 7,000 to 4,300, the drop was relative quick so my brakes were hot. We were glad to get to Sedona, warmer temperatures new sights and free night’s stay at Thousand Trails with our membership. It always difficult trying to find a site at night, you don’t want your headlights on to shower your neighbor with bright light but, its hard sometimes to see the lay of the land. This RV Park is huge, you can see that a lot of people stay here through the winter months.  There are lots of native culture here with parks to visit, our next stop is Tuzigoot National Monument in Cottonwood AZ, just a few miles away. The clouds are fluffy with sun shinning through them, love these warm days. In front of us a hill with what looks like a primitive hand built stone building, it shows it age, 700 plus years. This is a National Monument so a mandatory check in with the rangers, we have a National Park Senior Pass that allows us in, it has already saved us a bunch. This structure is very interesting in that it was really a primitive condo project with all the rooms connected, the spaces were very small but it housed 200 people in 110 rooms. This worth the stop to better understand our history in the west. The United Verde Copper Mine operated around this structure from 1927 -1950. The rangers mentioned another interesting spot was the city of Jerome which way up the surrounding mountain. It was famous for its copper and silver mines that were some of the largest in the USA, 2 billion pounds of copper, silver and gold. The town is now a study of history for tourists and artist. We did stop by the Jerome Hotel which was a hospital at one time and now a famous haunted hotel & restaurant. Angela had a blood orange margarita and calamari which was excellent. We do our walk around town and then head down the mountain to Cottonwood AZ near our RV park, Angela finds us a great place for dinner called The Colt Grill. Most of the servers are Hispanic and the conversation is not always understood, the good news is the food is fantastic.  Our walk back to the car takes us by Larry’s Antiques and a shop our daughter Mackenzie would love called Glitter Art, it also had a unicorn in the window.
