Tybee Island- 2-19-2019
We are up early ready to explore Tybee Island and of course find coffee for Angela. The weather is drizzly and rain coats are needed, its warm but wet. Our camp site is done in white rock and Oak trees, pretty common in eastern costal areas. We don’t have to walk to far to find coffee, a local company called Tybean fulfills Angela’s need, it was located near a tourist area called Tybee Oaks, full local shops in small cabin like stores with local as well as typical tourist fare. Walking down the sidewalk you could tell this was not tourist season thank goodness. One small shop called Seaside Sisters drew us in for a closer look and they were so kind to have a husband bench to rest our weary bones and hide our credit cards. Here is a spot not to miss, Ralph Douglas Art Gallery, it’s really a mix of yard sale junk with some of Ralphs ideas of art. It was entertaining and we did buy something, a glass peace symbol pendant for Angela. The next stop was to take a picture of the Lighthouse Pizza sign that had a thoughtful quote, I love using words in interesting ways. Every tourist town has its opportunities to take pictures in front of or inside of things that relate to where you are, yes Angela survived the shark attack and later to become Neptune’s bride as well as the Tybee Queen. We love walking around the neighborhoods with other sites of interest, we found this custom golf cart parked in the drive way which is not unusual around resort and tourist areas like this, they use them for doing all kinds of things rather than full sized cars yes, they are legal in the streets. Thoughts of lunch run through our heads so as we have done throughout this adventure, we ask a local. Unanimously they say Sundae Café is a great place so, off we walk and find a line backed out the door, this did not discourage us so we give the hostess our name, the place was packed with locals so we knew we were in a good place. The food was worth the wait and we head for the beach to walk off the calories. Every few blocks there are boardwalks down to the beach, the streets are lined with holiday rentals from the very grand to the one room studios. We reach the first boardwalk that takes us down to the sand and see these warning signs of Venomous snakes and as we find out more of a ploy to keep you off the sand dunes which don’t do well under foot. In walking through the neighborhood we see these dramatic residential duplexes with a interesting sign saying Y’all Come Inn with a very notable name on it, formally Paula Dean’s. We stop to talk to a neighbor who fills us in on the buildings that went in to foreclosure and investors like Paula Deen picked them up for cheap. Next stop is Fort Screven, everything is just blocks away and we start the walking tour. There is a fascinating story about this island that was originally a fort that protected The Savanah Bay and then sold to the city of Tybee for $200,000 which included 275 buildings.
